LIVER
Our
current volume of liver surgery is 110
procedures per year (2005) with 58 segmental
and lobary resections and 52 ablations. This
volume is far above the 25 procedures per
year needed to qualify as a high volume
center (Annals of Surgery vol. October
2005). Post operative stay is generally 4-7
days following resection and 1-2 days
following ablation. Operative mortality for
resection is 3% and for ablation 1%.
The liver is the
only organ that can regenerate following
surgery.
The regenerative
capacity of the liver allows for resection
of up to ~ 75% volume (normal liver) and ~
40% volume (cirrhotic liver).
Tumors
in the liver must be completely resected or
ablated with
Medical Oncology
evaluation pre and post surgery is strongly
recommended and a
requirement for our patients.
More effective
chemotherapy and biological agents allow a
greater percentage of patients to become
surgically resectable following treatment
with an improved 5 year survival.
