TREATMENTS
Breast
Tumors: Lumpectomy and mastectomy
with sentinel lymph node mapping and plastic
surgery reconstruction when necessary.
Pre-operative evaluation may include
MRE and PET scans

We have recently completed over 700 cases of
lymphatic mapping for breast melanoma.
Melanoma:
Primary melanoma excision with sentinel
lymph node mapping and node dissection when
required including plastic surgery
reconstruction

Liver
Tumors: Primary and metastatic
tumors of the liver. Our experience with
hepatic resections and radiofrequencv
ablation is extensive with a data base of
over 800 cases. Intra-operative
ultrasound is used
during every case, whether open or
laparoscopic, for anatomic resolution and
surgical
planning. Recently laparoscopic liver
resections have been added to our procedures
with good results. Blood loss is minimized
with the use of specialized cauterization
devices, linear staples and low central
venous pressure.
We recentley
presented our results from our hepatic
resections and RFA data at the
2009 Gastrointestinal Cancers
Symposium
Science and Multidisciplinary Management of GI Malignancies. San Francisco.

Upper
Gastrointestinal Tract: Distal
esophageal, GE junction and primary gastric
tumors constitute a large percentage of our
GI surgical volume, Surgical resection of
the distal
esophagus, partial or total gastrectomy with
reconstruction options that may include
creating a new ‘stomach-like pouch” using
the small intestine are performed. This
allows removal of (he tumor and surrounding
lymph nodes while still allowing the patient
to consume food normally after surgery

Pancreatic
Tumors: Small tumors of the ampulla
are removed via a transduodenal approach
while tumors of the head of the pancreas are
resected using the Whipple
procedure. We have recently seen a
significant increase in solid and cystic
tumors of the mid body and distal pancreas
requiring less extensive resections for
removal.
Laparoscopy with intra-operative ultrasound
is used to detect advanced disease at the
start of each operation

Colorectal
Tumors: Both open and robotic
colon resections are performed on
patients with colorectal cancer depending on
the extent of disease prior to surgery and
body habitus

Sarcomas:
We have had extensive experience in the
resection of retroperitoneal and
extremity sarcomas, a multi-disciplinary
team including radiation oncologists and the
use of Brachytherapy catheters or IMRT has
resulted in good long term results
